Well – we’re all home now (wherever home is in the 21st business traveler’s world) and suffering from post-convention withdraw. It’s amazing how many people I work and associate with that I really truly do like! It’s a balmy 49 degrees this morning in Colorado Springs, and nary a cloud in sight on a blue azure slate of a sky. As much as I loved Houston, I’m just simply amazed that it was 91degrees at 11pm. WOW!
What a whirlwind our time together was! From speeches to speakers, training to talking, it was all there this year for sure! With over 5,800 of our fellow industry experts, we were there in force! Amongst many new faces there were industry veterans, demonstrating the diversity of our membership on a variety of levels!
Speaking of which, I was struck this morning by a wonderful article in The Huffington Post. It’s something that is near and dear to my heart – understanding aging…LOL! Ok – now that you’re done laughing, get up off the floor and read on! Much as we hate to admit it, change occurs every minute of every day. With every death there is a birth, with every firing, there’s a hiring (we hope!). Much like one of my favorite quotes – a bit of a take on Newton’s third law of motion:
To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction
So how does this impact aging, and where am I going with this? It’s an article that can be applied to everyone reading this, especially NBTA volunteer members. Understanding what the member of the future looks like. It can also be stated…what the team-member from work looks like, or what the business traveler of the future looks like…take a gander at the article – it’s quite fascinating!
As evidenced by NBTA this year, we’ve jumped onboard the technology train full force. From iTunes apps to Twitter and Facebook, we’re there, and we’re global! For those in meeting planning, you know what’s next. Electronic tags, electronic supplier booth locators and more!
Have no fear – the NBTA Board of Directors is aware of the technology changes that impact our annual Convention. We’ll also continue to work with our committee’s and analysts to understand how to better impact education, networking, our local chapters and more!
So – enough musings on the demographic and psychographic changes that are impacting each and every one of us. Thanks for making Houston 2010 such a memorable event! I’m looking forward to seeing you all in Denver 2011. In the meantime, make sure you’re participating in your local chapter – it’s a great chance to meet some of those new faces of members who don’t wear watches…LOL!
Fondly,
Craig A . Banikowski 5/6/2010
I have recently returned from NBTA Board of Directors and Chapter Presidents Council meetings in Boston, MA, and I am always impressed at the level of volunteer participation our association has. I know this is one of the key factors that continues to set our association apart from others and provides greater value to the industry as a whole. As I stated to numerous people at the meetings, it is vital that participation is encouraged at all levels.
We have several positions open this year for the Board of Directors, and I encourage NBTA members to consider this as a critical path forward for both the association, as well as for your career. It is only through your participation that we can offer our members a slate of top-notch candidates from which to choose.
I also encourage your involvement in local elections as a stepping stone to national Board opportunities.
NBTA is also in need of your participation as a voting body. By voting, you’re providing your input to the future of the association and corporate travel industry as a whole.
Please take time to become part of the process by voting and considering your future as part of the Board structure at NBTA.

As volcanic ash has forced closures of significant portions of European airspace since April 15, I have witnessed first hand the power of the business travel community. I’ve also heard from many of you over the past few days, sharing ideas and resources as we navigate this international industry crisis:
- Travel managers have ensured every affected traveler was quickly identified and provided with regular updates, using people-tracking systems and working with TMCs.
- Working with hotel partners, and rail carriers where possible, companies have changed bookings to make sure business travelers were accommodated in extremely challenging circumstances.
- As air space begins opening again, partnerships with airlines will be invaluable in getting travelers where they need to go as quickly as possible.
It's the value of the managed travel community in action! And I've watched it all from an interesting vantage point: I'm a travel manager, I work for a global hospitality company, I am the elected president of the world's largest business travel association, and I myself have been stranded overseas a result of the closures. On the whole, I am proud of how our industry has managed through another crisis.
Of course, with any crisis come those who will attempt to take advantage. From many of you I’ve heard that some hotels, airports and ground transportation firms are doing just that by gouging prices at a time when travelers have no options. I would like to recognize and thank those travel partners that are NOT taking advantage of the situation. We are all in this together as an industry, and cooperation and partnership is key to keeping our heads above water until we’re in the clear.
The Future
Perhaps a more important measure of our effectiveness will be what we do as the immediate spotlight fades. The grounding of so many flights has created a negative economic impact that has yet to be understood, and one that will last for months as the benefits of countless postponed meetings and sales calls are delayed.
As the dust settles -- literally -- work will commence to create systemic and infrastructure changes that should better prepare the industry and governments to address similar challenges in the future. With more than 5,000 business travel professional members -- representing both buyers and suppliers, and with heavy concentrations in the United States and Europe -- NBTA is uniquely positioned to represent you as governments and the industry work to address the challenges that this situation is bringing to light.
What Can You Do?
- Share your success stories. Tell us what your company has done to manage through the volcanic ash crisis.
- Identify the challenges. You've seen the real challenges, the stories the media haven't told. Let us know what they are, so we can work to improve our industry systems and infrastructure to ameliorate those challenges in the future.
Share publicly on the NBTA LinkedIn group (www.nbta.org/linkedin) or privately email pr@nbta.org. (As always, information shared privately will only be used anonymously unless you provide permission to do otherwise.)
- Stay connected. Use your connections through NBTA to learn how other companies are handling the challenges. Stay up to date with the NBTA Daily News Brief, where we will continue to distribute breaking news. Direct members can see in real time how firms are helping their stranded travelers via the NBTA Direct Member List Serve (www.nbta.org/directlistserv).

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today released its 20-year forecast for air travel growth in the United States, and – surprise, surprise – they say our aviation system needs an upgrade.
The FAA predicts U.S. airlines will reach one billion passengers a year by 2023, and the number of passengers on U.S. airlines domestically and internationally is forecast to increase from 704 million in 2009 to 1.21 billion by 2030. That’s a lot of people, people!
To accommodate these increases, the FAA says Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) implementation is necessary. While you and I have been saying that for more than 20 years, we’re glad that the FAA continues to recognize and encourage it, as well.
Failure to adapt to our growth is going to hurt the economy. We know that by 2022, if we have still not updated our air traffic system, it would cost the U.S. economy $22 billion annually in lost activity!
Just think about what $22 billion could mean for Americans in 2022:
- $63 for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. (using U.S. Census Bureau Projections)
- Average 2% salary increase for every working American (using Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for 2018)
- 4 years of tuition for 141,025 students at private colleges (using HSBC projection of cost of college in 2022)
- Enough dollar bills to go around the Earth at the equator 85.6 times
Let’s not let this happen! The Senate is prepared to proceed soon in passing the long-stalled FAA Reauthorization bill, which would speed NextGen deployment.
Help your nation grow! Contact your Senators and Representatives and tell them to finally pass this legislation. Our industry, our economy, and our future depend on it!
You can send your Congressional representatives a letter by accessing the NBTA Legislative Action Center.

This week NBTA kicked off the new decade with a major announcement -- the launch of NBTA Europe. When I started as NBTA President in August 2009, I talked about my commitment to developing NBTA as a global community of excellence. With a lot of hard work by a lot of people, I'm proud to see the vision becoming a reality so quickly. GLOBALIZATION at work!
NBTA Europe launched with six Founding Partners -- all national associations in Europe. Their members become members of the NBTA family, bringing about 2,000 new business travel professionals into NBTA, including 1,100 buyers. NBTA was already "internationalized" -- offering members the world's largest business travel network, including the largest number of buyer members in North America, Latin America, and Australia. Now your NBTA network also includes the largest group of travel buyers and strategic meetings managers in Europe - the world's second largest market.
This is all part of the plan to ensure that all aspects of global travel management, from business travel to meetings and events, to government travel, including sports travel and anything else that comes along as part of the “new normal” are covered by our association. We will do what's needed to meet industry needs. We have the resources, the drive, the leadership, and most importantly YOU, the members of NBTA, that will help ensure our collective continued success. Am I being a bit proud? YOU BET! I am extremely proud of this organization, both what it represents as well as what it has done for both myself and so many of my peers. And I look forward to additional challenges!
Remember: Singularly we have impact – collectively we can change the world……
Cheers,
Craig

Those of us in the U.S. just had our Thanksgiving holiday, a time when we eat too much turkey and give thanks for the blessings in our lives. In that spirit, I would like to extend a special thanks to you, NBTA's members, customers, and sponsors!
We at NBTA are thankful for those who participate in and support the organization. Your involvement helps us support you in both good times and challenging time. Your dedication helps NBTA continue to advance the corporate travel community.
One example of an actively involved member organization is Virgin Australia. When I was asked to speak at this year's NBTA Asia Pacific Regional Business Travel Conference in Australia, Virgin Australia stepped forward to make my trip possible. Not only did I have a have a great experience at the conference, but I had a great trip there and back. Special kudos to Virgin Australia -- the flight crew was simply awesome, and what a product!
Thank again for the special role you play in this industry and this association. As a community, with colleagues and friends, our industry has come together to learn from one another, embrace challenges and change, and show the world the value of business travel.
All the best,
Craig

As we rapidly approach the year end with holidays in sight, and projects yet to complete, I have started thinking about the year that has literally vanished before my eyes. Yes, this past year in our industry truly has been about change....for many it's been a tough year, myself included! We are all expected to do more with less, embrace change with a smile, adapt to new business conditions, and more. Can we do it? You bet we can! This industry has proven its resilience - we can and will adapt. We've taken on procurement, meetings, metrics and more, and we will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of our businesses!
Change is also a theme for NBTA's business. Many of you know that besides a new Executive Director & COO, our dear friend Mike McCormick, we also have a primarily new Board! Additionally, the NBTA Foundation Board will transition to a new Chair and new Board members in January. Given these leadership changes, I asked our seasoned veteran volunteer leader Scott Solombrino to stay on for another two-year term as head of the Allied Leadership Council. Having someone that I can lean on that has some of the "tribal knowledge" about NBTA is critical as we ramp up NBTA's globalization efforts. Kevin Maguire, our Chairman, also helps both Jim and I as we navigate our way through the sometimes choppy waters in our efforts to continue the great work that has gone on over the past several years. These efforts will continue to enable NBTA to provide you, our valued members, the necessary tools for your success as we march towards another year - the last year of the first decade of the 21st Century. Here's to change - love it or hate it, we're all living it....cheers friends!!

Well....this has only taken me 66 days to get going on! It has truly been a whirlwind since I took office as NBTA President & CEO in San Diego this year! From the NBTA Convention I left for Canberra, Australia, then headed to Seattle, then London, followed by Bangkok, intermingled with trips to Alexandria, VA and Los Angeles. Each trip gave me opportunities to meet with NBTA members and partners, as well as volunteer leadership and staff of our regional affiliates. And of course, this is in addition to my day job as Director, Global Travel Management, Supply Management, Hilton Worldwide ... whew! But it's all been great, because there are tremendous opportunities for NBTA to continue growing and improving to even better serve our industry, and because Hilton has been so supportive!
So rather than try and write a huge blog now, I thought I would simply start from my most recent news, and interlace the past few months along the way - does that work for you?
ALC - yes, the NBTA Allied Leadership Council met in Denver, Colorado during what can only be described as a late October massive snowfall. Everyone arrived with a travel story, and then there were those that had a story - but didn't make it! But for those that were on hand, it was a wonderful meeting hosted by the venerable Brown Palace Hotel! It was a super time and many challenges were discussed. More later - stay tuned my friends!!!

As you may have read in the trade media, the Association for Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) Board last week published a press release proposing a merger with NBTA. The move comes two months after the ACTE Board rejected a previous merger proposal. The turnaround has led to some confusion in the marketplace and questions about the current status of merger discussions, so I want to share NBTA's thinking.
NBTA is always open to constructive discussions with any organization about jointly advancing the industry, so I applaud the ACTE Board for its change of heart and its new apparent willingness to consider a merger.
As we evaluate the proposal, the NBTA Board's first duty is to you -- our members and supporters who have made NBTA the largest and most successful business travel organization in the world. With that in mind, you should know that in the two months since the NBTA Board voted unanimously to support the previous merger proposal, new developments have raised important questions about ACTE's financial viability and about how the organization does business. Most notably, the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) pulled out of a previously announced strategic alliance with ACTE, and did so in the midst of PCMA's own due diligence process. NBTA's support of a merger with ACTE has always been contingent upon the completion of due diligence, and this latest development reinforces the need for NBTA to ensure we do not take on major liabilities that would ultimately burden our constituents around the globe.
Further, I'm troubled by the current ACTE leadership's approach to merger "discussions." The proposal made last week was sent to reporters before it was sent to NBTA, and we first learned about it from members of the press, not from ACTE. Just as you expect to work with your business partners in good faith, so does NBTA. This "negotiation by press release" approach does not bode well for a process that should be designed to create new, positive thinking to benefit our industry.
NBTA will give fair consideration to the proposal, with the ever-present goal of creating the strongest possible NBTA to benefit our members and the industry at large, while also keeping in mind the concerns outlined here.
In the meantime, I look forward to seeing many of you at the NBTA International Convention & Exposition in San Diego , August 23-26. Despite the pressures of the current economy -- and unlike other industry events held this year -- the Convention is poised to be one of the largest in NBTA history. I hope you'll join thousands of your colleagues at The Business Travel Event of the YearSM!
